Farallon EN Diagnostics utility

The Farallon EN Diagnostics utility displays information about the Farallon Ethernet PC Card and can be used to view SNMP statistics. Farallon EN Diagnostics may be used with all MacOS computers except PowerBooks 2400 and 3400. To install and use the Farallon EN Diagnostics utility, follow the procedure below.

1.	Insert the Farallon EN Installer Disk into your computer.

2.	Drag the Farallon EN Diagnostics icon from the Farallon EN Installer Disk to the startup disk of your computer. Then eject the Farallon EN Installer Disk.

3.	Double-click the Farallon EN Diagnostics icon on your startup disk. The diagnostic utility will search for your Farallon PC Card. If the utility finds the PC Card, the Farallon EN Diagnostics dialog box appears.

Note: If the utility does not find the PC Card, the utility will post a message box describing the problem, quit, and return you to the desktop. If this happens, first verify that the Farallon PC Card software is installed. Then make sure that the card is securely seated in the slot and try again.

The Farallon EN Diagnostics dialog box contains three information areas: Slots, Device Info, and Tests.

Slots
Notice that the Farallon EN PC Card is selected in the Slots area of the dialog box. This means that the information displayed under Device Info and Tests pertains to the Farallon PC Card. If another Farallon card or adapter appears in the Slots area you can select it by clicking its name.

Device Info
The Device Info area contains general information about the item that is highlighted in the Slots area. This includes its name, location, Ethernet hardware address, and amount of memory.

Tests
Tests are not available for the Farallon Ethernet PC Card. Note that the Test button is gray.

4.	The EN Diagnostics utility can display SNMP statistics for the Farallon PC Card. To see SNMP statistics, click the SNMP button. The SNMP message box appears.

The first five fields in this message box show general information about the card, including the version of the driver. The next three fields (AdminStatus, OperationalStatus, LastChange) describe the status of the card.

The last ten fields on the left side of the box (beginning with InOctets) are statistical counters. All of the items on the right side of the window are statistical counters for packets and errors. These counters let you see if the card is transmitting and receiving, and if error counters are incrementing. Certain errors are normal and do not indicate any sort of significant disruption. If there is a problem with the network, however, these counters can help you locate the source.

For more details about the items in the SNMP message box, see the following documents: RFC 1213, RFC 1284. These technical documents can be obtained from the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers).
